Amaya
At the end of my first year, I was able to complete a month of volunteering in Sri Lanka. I would 100% recommend this amazing opportunity to others who are passionate about learning about new cultures and making a change to underdeveloped communities.
Entry year
2024What do you like about your course and why?
What I enjoy most about my course is how it allows me to explore the tourism industry from multiple angles while still finding my own niche. My passion for travel began back in college when I studied travel and tourism, but university has helped me develop a much deeper understanding of the sector — especially the marketing, business and events sides of tourism.
What do you enjoy most about Surrey?
I love the nature surrounding the campus, and how peaceful it feels here. I enjoy having a range of experienced lecturers who are just as passionate as me towards their fields of work, which is really inspiring for me when I have specific questions.
Tell us more about your volunteering in Sri Lanka!
At the end of my first year, I was able to complete a month of volunteering in Sri Lanka, learning about English Development and Marine & Wildlife. It was such a life changing month for me, being able to immerse myself into a different culture and whole new way of life. I am grateful to Surrey for offering such initiatives, as the month I spent away definitely enhanced my knowledge of the tourism industry. I would 100% recommend this amazing opportunity to others who are passionate about learning about new cultures and making a change to underdeveloped communities.
What do you want to do when you graduate?
When I graduate, I would like to work within the business and marketing side of the tourism industry. I would also like to go travelling, as it’s my favourite thing to do, and I have considered working in other countries too.
