Emma

I am currently studying abroad in Hong Kong for one semester through Surrey, which has been an incredible opportunity to experience tourism from an Asian perspective. The highlight has been learning how different things work across cultures, which I believe will benefit my future global career.

What do you like about your course and why?

I really enjoy studying International Tourism Management because the course is very industry-focused and connects to real life scenarios. The variety of modules, from airport operations to sustainability and social justice in tourism, has helped me understand how complex and varied the tourism industry actually is. I especially like how many of our lecturers have industry experience and share insights from their own careers, which makes the learning feel relevant and practical.

Overall, the course has strengthened my passion for the tourism industry and inspired me to find future careers around the world.

What do you enjoy most about Surrey?

There are so many opportunities to get involved, whether it’s joining societies, or using the facilities like the gym and study spaces. I especially love the events where you get to meet and talk about other students' experiences and opportunities Surrey has given them abroad, whether that’s on study abroad, placement or summer opportunities.

The university has a very international environment, so I’ve met people from all over the world and learned a lot from their perspectives. This has also helped me feel more confident about my future in the tourism industry where I would be working with a range of international people.

Tell us about your study abroad experience

I am currently studying abroad in Hong Kong for one semester through Surrey, which has been an incredible opportunity to experience tourism from an Asian perspective. I’m taking studying at the Hong Kong Polytechnic School of Hotel and Tourism Management, and I’m taking tourism and hospitality modules here while also exploring local culture, food and living, which has helped me apply my Surrey knowledge in a real international context.

Living in a new country has made me more independent and confident, especially in adapting to unfamiliar environments and working with different people. The highlight has been learning how different things work across cultures, which I believe will benefit my future global career.

What do you want to do when you graduate?

When I graduate, I hope to build an international career in the tourism and hospitality industry, ideally working in destination management or hotel operations overseas. I am particularly interested in Asia, as my study abroad experience in Hong Kong has inspired me to work in culturally diverse environments. Travelling has always been my passion, and I want a career that allows me to connect tourism with people and creating memorable experiences for them.

I believe the skills and knowledge I’ve gained from Surrey will help me take on leadership roles and make a positive impact in the global tourism sector.

What's your advice for new students?

I would advise future students to be open-minded and ready to explore the tourism industry from many different perspectives.

The course is very diverse, so you will learn about everything from marketing, finance, hotel and airport operations to sustainability and tourism ethics, which helps you discover what area you are interested in.

Make the most of the placement opportunities and study abroad options, as they all help you build confidence and real industry skills, at the same time as experiencing the best time of your life. If you have a passion for travel, culture and people, then this course is a great pathway to an exciting and global future career.
