Civil Engineering MScWhy did you choose to study your course at Surrey?
Since i was on a graduate scheme that included rotations, so i needed flexibility in where I could study. The distance learning and part-time options was perfect, allowing me to continue working in different locations while maintaining stability in my studies. The course also offered flexible timeframes for completion, which meant I could take longer if work became busy or a module was more technical.
What are the best things about Surrey and your course?
- Online teaching
- Lecturers are approachable and supportive
- Helpful advice on module choices, especially since my BSc was in mathematics
- Ability to sit exams at an assessment centre close to home
What are your career plans?
I’ve completed my graduate scheme and plan to stay with my company, working as a site engineer on a variety of projects to gain as much experience as possible.
Once I’ve built up more site experience, I’d like to move into temporary works engineering, focusing on designing solutions for complex engineering problems. Having practical site knowledge will help me understand what works and what doesn’t when it comes to construction.

Working alongside your master’s is very useful, as it helps you apply theory to real-world situations. Seeing the practical application of what you learn deepens your understanding and makes the experience even more interesting.
