Musical Theatre CertHEGraduation year
2025Why did you choose to do a foundation year?
My deep-rooted love of musical theatre made it an easy decision for me to do a foundation year at GSA and I have always been motivated to pursue opportunities within performing arts. The program encompasses all three disciplines with equal focus, and I wanted to develop my skills in singing, dancing, and acting while strengthening my overall confidence as a performer. I wanted to gain a deeper understanding of the audition process and feel better prepared to approach future auditions with professionalism and ease.
The foundation year felt like the ideal opportunity to get an insight into a future full-time course, offering expert training and guidance from professional teachers and an experienced program leader. I knew that a chance to work alongside talented peers would help me to evolve both as a performer and as an individual.
I wanted to be challenged, to push myself, and to develop a deeper understanding of the performing arts industry. The foundation year provided a supportive yet demanding environment where I could grow, refine my skills, and truly commit to the path I’ve always dreamed of following.
What did you enjoy about it?
The foundation year was an incredibly rewarding experience, and I genuinely loved every minute of it. I learned so much and made real progress in developing my skills, but it also taught me a great deal about myself as a performer. It allowed me to build my confidence, recognise my strengths, and understand the unique qualities I bring to the process. The experience and growth I gained in repertoire, audition technique, singing, acting, and dance were truly invaluable, and they reaffirmed my dedication to pursuing a BA program.
Our public performance project at the end of the year was a wonderful opportunity to work together throughout the entire creative process and create a memorable show with a powerful message. Being part of that creative journey on stage was an experience I will always value.
What support have you received at Surrey?
The teachers and programme leader were extremely approachable and supportive throughout the program, and they consistently encouraged me to push myself, which in turn strengthened my confidence in my abilities. They were always willing to listen, offer constructive feedback on my performances and provide thoughtful advice whenever I needed it. I also appreciated the high expectations set during the course, as they motivated me to keep improving, stay focused and continually challenge myself.
How has your foundation year had an impact on you?
My foundation year has had a significant impact on me both personally and as a performer. I understood that it’s not about striving for perfection but about embracing continuous learning that truly helps me grow and allows me to challenge myself as much as possible.
With each lesson, performance, and experience, I’ve added another layer to who I am as a performer.
I’ve come to deeply value the importance of taking in every piece of feedback and knowledge offered to me. These learning experiences have had a profound effect on my confidence, my willingness to take on new challenges and my openness to engaging with and learning from others.
