"One of the biggest benefits has been the opportunity to study cutting-edge topics in AI, robotics, and machine learning, which are highly relevant in today’s world. The course exposes me to current research and practical applications, helping me stay aligned with industry developments."
Why did you choose to continue your postgraduate studies at Surrey, instead of another university?
I chose to continue my postgraduate studies at Surrey because I knew that obtaining a masters degree would significantly expand my career opportunities. In fields like AI, robotics, and machine learning, advanced qualifications are increasingly expected and help open doors that would otherwise remain closed.
Staying at Surrey also made sense because I was already familiar with the teaching quality, facilities, and academic environment.
Additionally, pursuing a masters here supports my long-term goal of achieving professional chartership, which is an important milestone in my career path. Overall, it was a strategic decision based on both familiarity and future ambitions.
How did the university support you in your transition to becoming a postgraduate student?
The transition process was made relatively smooth through Surrey’s straightforward application system, particularly via Surrey Self-Service. This reduced administrative friction and allowed me to focus more on preparing for postgraduate study itself.
While the support was not heavily structured, the clarity and efficiency of the process made it easy to progress without unnecessary delays. Once enrolled, access to course materials and communication with academic staff helped me settle into the expectations of postgraduate study. Overall, the simplicity of the system was the main factor that supported my transition.
What have been the biggest benefits so far of continuing your studies at Surrey?
One of the biggest benefits has been the opportunity to study cutting-edge topics in AI, robotics, and machine learning, which are highly relevant in today’s world. The course exposes me to current research and practical applications, helping me stay aligned with industry developments. Access to facilities and opportunities such as iTEK and the ability to engage directly with knowledgeable professors has also been valuable. Beyond academics, being part of the university environment allows me to connect with peers who share similar interests, which adds to both personal and professional growth. Overall, the experience has been intellectually stimulating and socially beneficial.
What advice would you give to a current Surrey undergraduate student who is thinking of staying for a masters?
I would advise seriously considering a masters degree, especially in today’s competitive and fast-changing job market. There are increasing barriers to entry in many industries, and having a postgraduate qualification can make a meaningful difference.
Since a masters is typically only one year, it is a relatively short investment with long-term benefits. At Surrey, you also gain exposure to advanced topics such as AI and robotics, which are becoming increasingly important across many sectors. If you are aiming to strengthen your career prospects and deepen your knowledge, staying on for a masters is a practical and worthwhile step.
What do you plan to do after graduating and how has your masters degree supported that?
After graduating, I plan to begin the next stage of my career, whether that involves entering industry or exploring other professional opportunities. My masters degree has equipped me with advanced technical skills and a deeper understanding of AI and robotics, which are highly valuable in many fields. It has also helped me build confidence in tackling complex problems and working on innovative projects. These experiences have broadened my perspective on what is possible and prepared me to take on new challenges. Overall, the degree has laid a strong foundation for whichever path I choose to pursue.
