2025Why did you choose to do a foundation year?
I was initially doing Musical Theatre at college, but I became frustrated with the 'self-centred' approach in its training, so I decided to follow my passion in acting, as I was seeking something more collaborative and rewarding. However, I felt that I needed an additional year before a degree to gain more experience in fields that I was unfamiliar with; a foundation year really enticed me to strengthen my ensemble skills in particular.
I also just wanted to take myself - and for others to take me - more seriously, and I thought that a foundation year would do that - instead of diving in to three years, it eased me in whilst still challenging me intensely.
What did you enjoy about it?
To be honest, everything! I’ve loved learning new things that have changed and almost pioneered the way I think about things, both in relation to the world and how I continue to approach work/acting. I’ve enjoyed learning how to manage my emotions stronger, in both a personal and professional manner. I’ve also revelled being in such a creative learning environment every day - being able to share passion with like-minded creative individuals is truly inspiring.
What support have you received at Surrey?
An abundance. Especially with tutors, they haven’t seemed distant like at college, professional relationships have been made and I have had 1-to-1 chats with many of my tutors throughout the year.
How has your foundation year had an impact on you?
It has given me so many professional skills that I use daily and will continue to use for my entire career.
It also enabled me to get onto numerous degree courses where I might’ve lacked the necessary skills without it. After this year, I feel like I’m not just an actor, I’m a well rounded artist; this year has not only flourished what I already enjoyed but also promoted numerous other new tools.
What advice do you have for students thinking of doing a foundation year?
Definitely do it. You meet some of the most amazingly like minded people, and create the fondest memories. If you were seeking a degree course, don’t consider a foundation year as a passive option because you didn’t get onto a degree course, consider it an active chance to grow and cultivate your passions and strengths.
