Entry year

2025

Why did you choose to do a foundation year?

I chose the foundation year at GSA because I wanted intensive conservatoire-style training while still having space to develop my confidence and technique, in order to inform the next stages of my career. The programme appealed to me because of its practical focus and emphasis on preparing students for professional training and gaining knowledge about the industry.

What did you enjoy about it?

What I enjoyed most was the opportunity to explore different approaches to performance and push myself outside my comfort zone. I liked being surrounded by other creative people, receiving professional training, and seeing my confidence grow over the course. As someone who already has an agent, being able to learn in a conservatoire space, turning theory into practice, and still audition for any upcoming jobs was a big win for me.

What support have you received at Surrey?

The support I received really helped me grow in confidence. Tutors were approachable and encouraging, and I always felt pushed to improve while still being supported throughout the process. I was able to go to any tutor for self-tape feedback in my audition process for BA acting as well as any auditions I received during my year at GSA.

How has your foundation year had an impact on you?

The year challenged me in ways that helped me mature both creatively and personally. I feel like the maturity I gained from this course will now impact the way I handle my career in the industry and any auditions I may have in the future. I became more confident in myself, more open to feedback, and more willing to take risks in my work.

What advice do you have for students thinking of doing a foundation year?

My advice would be to go into the foundation year with an open mind and be willing to step outside your comfort zone. Plan ahead! It’s a great opportunity to grow in confidence, develop your skills, and learn more about yourself as a performer. I’d also say make the most of the support from tutors and the people around you because the collaborative environment is a huge part of the foundation year.
