"I'd recommend the course to someone who wants to learn to write more effectively. It has improved my writing and allowed me to keep exploring and refining my voice."
“My BA in Creative Writing at the University of Surrey gave me a thorough grounding in critical theories and helped me apply them to improve my own work. I decided to do the MA in the same subject as I wasn’t ready to let go of regular feedback and the motivation induced by actual deadlines.
I'd recommend the MA to someone who wants to learn to write more effectively. Without a doubt, the MA has improved my writing and allowed me to keep exploring and refining my voice in the genres I already work in.
Academic deadlines also mean learning to say a piece is done, even though it would be easy to pick at it with minor edits forever.
"Any success I might have in the future would in large part be due to the amazing support I’ve received from my supervisor, Paul Vlitos."
As with any skill, some people are going to have more talent than others, but no one produces flawless work the second they start typing.
Feedback and editorial support are the most useful things this MA has offered me. Writing is naturally a very solitary pursuit, and doing an MA means your work gets a level of editorial scrutiny that's hard to find elsewhere.
It's also easy as a writer to get stuck in a mire of self-loathing and doubt, and the MA provides encouragement and motivation.
My final portfolio for my MA was a selection of linked chapters from a novel I’m writing. Any success I might have in the future would in large part be due to the amazing support I’ve received from my supervisor, Paul Vlitos.”
