"Studying at Surrey has shown me strengths in my character that I never thought I had. I’ve gained confidence in my abilities, which has encouraged me to pursue a career as a barrister."
"I attended an Open Day prior to starting my degree, which confirmed that Surrey was where I wanted to study. I felt very welcome, as did my family, and had a fantastic day talking to different students and tutors. All my questions were answered and I found out a lot about student life at Surrey, as well as my degree programme.
Law has been a wonderful subject to study and I’ve become very passionate about it. It challenges you to use critical analysis and to be creative with your arguments, which is something I enjoy.
Despite the degree giving you the option to enter the legal profession via the traditional route, it also equips you with skills and attributes that will also allow you to pursue an alternative career. I’ve been able to study a wide range of subjects, from medical law to evidence and sentencing, which has given me good insight and shown me the areas of law I wish to practise in.
"The academic staff on the Law programme are exceptional."
They have become a big part of my life, which makes me very sad to leave Surrey! Recently, when I gained a Major Exhibition Scholarship at the Inner Temple, many of my academic tutors and the Head of the Law School were the first to send me congratulations messages.
It has always been lovely to know that the staff care about you and your wellbeing, and want you to succeed.
There are many things that are great about life at Surrey. I have commuted into University for the duration of my degree, and as a result, I have really appreciated the beautiful campus and tight-knit community feeling when I am on site. In the summer, my friends and I have picnics near the lake. During the winter, Starbucks becomes favourite haunt!
Guildford high street is only a short walk from campus. Having such a variety of shops and restaurants so close by has been brilliant. I’ve also enjoyed Surrey Sports Park which has numerous facilities, including the gym, a pool and a rock climbing wall. Whether you want to really work out, or secretly watch the Harlequin Rugby Team training in the gym, there is something for everyone.
Studying at Surrey has shown me strengths in my character that I never thought I had. I have gained confidence in my abilities, which has encouraged me to pursue a career as a barrister. I initially began my studies in medicine at another university where I felt unhappy - without Surrey, life would have turned out very differently.
After I graduate, I am undertaking barrister training, formally known as the BPTC, in London."
