Student profile
Ivan, an MSc student at the University of Surrey

Ivan

"Having these lecturers guide me has given me the confidence to aim for ambitious complex goals and to challenge myself more."

Why did you choose to study your course at Surrey?

Over the past few years, I started to study machine learning in my own time. From this, my interest in AI also grew, especially in the application of AI in video game generations. I realised to excel in this field and fulfil my dream of building a good start up, I must acquire a good technical depth via academia. Therefore, I decided to join Surrey’s Computer Vision, Robotics and Machine Learning MSc for its great academic reputation in AI.

What are the best things about Surrey and your course?

The best thing about this course is the professors. They are all highly qualified and have taught me a lot of detailed information that I may not have acquired elsewhere or by studying on my own. Having these lecturers guide me has given me the confidence to aim for ambitious complex goals and to challenge myself more.

What are the best things about life here as a postgraduate student?

I love the Surrey campus because it is very beautiful and peaceful. I like to study in the library then go for a walk around the lake. I appreciate that the University of Surrey is close the London, the capital of the UK. It only takes 30mins via train to Waterloo station, which is where I usually live.

What are your career plans?

After meeting great professors and PhD students here, I have developed a great interest in research in this field, especially in 3D representation generation in the computer vision domain. I hope to continue doing research in this field either as a PhD student or look for jobs in industries where these skills can be applied, such as in the entertainment industry or robotics.

What advice do you have for students thinking of doing this course?

In the era of Artificial Intelligence, there has been a lot of discourse surrounding the significance of higher education when it feels like you can learn a lot on your own with the help of AI agents. However, the amount of guidance, detailed information and practical application of knowledge that I have experienced at Surrey is unrivalled to what I could acquire from AI.

Based on this, I would advise anyone that has an interest in this field of study to take the leap and learn from the experts here at Surrey.
