John Vlietstra

John, previously Mission Operational Commander, Royal Airforce Tactical Intelligence Wing, explains why doing the MBA at Surrey was the best choice for his career.

Course
Business Administration

"Since completing my undergraduate degree, I attended the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and was commissioned as an intelligence officer in the British Army. Since then I have been deployed all over the world, spending almost all my time abroad, including Afghanistan, Germany, Canada and many other countries.

The most valuable elements of the course have been doing real time consultancy projects for FTSE 100 firms which has proved an invaluable part of my personal as well as professional development.

Since leaving the regular military service I decided to complete an MBA to learn how to apply the excellent leadership skills I learnt as an officer and transfer these skills into a business context.

Choosing an MBA was a complex choice for me when I decided to leave the military. The options where diverse, but what struck me and made Surrey stand head and shoulders above the rest was the innovative course design and challenging nature of the work.

Studying an MBA has been eye opening in many ways and has helped link my previous leadership experience in the British Army to the business world in a really dynamic way.

The staff come from a wide range of backgrounds and their exceptional knowledge of both theoretical understanding and practical application is superb.

The most valuable elements of the course have been doing real time consultancy projects for FTSE 100 firms which has proved an invaluable part of my personal as well as professional development."
