CHOOSING US

As soon as I arrived at Surrey I was so impressed. Everything was in easy reach on the campus itself and the proximity to Guildford town centre was really attractive too. It was wonderful speaking with the staff and students who answered all my questions and I was able to talk to other prospective students like myself, many of whom also chose to join Surrey. Upon leaving the open day, I went away with the feeling that Surrey was the place for me as I already felt at home.

ACADEMICS AND FACILITIES

The staff are always there to help you with any question or problem whether it be academic or not. Having our very own floor of the library building for the School, as well as extensive material in the library itself and a dedicated study room, make the facilities at Surrey unique. Languages in the modern world tend to be overlooked, but for me, they are so incredibly important. I love being able to speak to others in their native languages, discover different cultures and look forward to a career that can take me abroad.

"My course includes modules which prepare me for a career in languages such as translation, the history of the French and Spanish speaking world and their current situation too. Our cohort is small, so you get to know everyone and discuss ideas and theories together".

YOUR LIFE HERE

The best thing about accommodation on campus is getting to meet new people while feeling safe and comfortable. I was so nervous to live with strangers but was pleasantly surprised; my room was spacious and everyone got along really well. The lake is a great place to meet friends or just to sit and read a book and the walk up to the Cathedral right next to campus is well worth it to look out over the town. During my second year, I joined the baking society to meet more people who shared my passion. It was great to speak with people from other courses and eat the amazing creations!.

CAREER SUPPORT/ YOUR PROFESSIONAL TRAINING EXPERIENCE

I was able to find support with any issue I have had in my time here, whether it was with my personal tutor who was always available or the Centre for Wellbeing. In my third year, I undertook a placement year working remotely with the University of Toulouse for eight months. I would speak with students in English, organising events and taking part in conferences and debates. The highlight of my placement year was getting to meet so many lovely people, hearing their stories and finding out our similarities. Despite not being in France, I was able to connect with people and make contacts for the future.

LOOKING BACK... AND FORWARD

Surrey has definitely given me a new outlook on life and prepared me for the future, but for me, the best moments were meeting so many friends here. I’ve made great memories and it’s always felt like my home. I’ve become a lot more independent and confident here too.

My future has two paths; either postgraduate study at Surrey or abroad, or take a year to explore and work in French or Spanish-speaking countries, to put my languages skills to use.
