Course
Midwifery BScWhat were the best things about your course?
The course at Surrey is very hands-on. You can do role-play in the Clinical Simulation Centre, which I used to find uncomfortable, but looking back it’s actually one of my favourite things about the course. It really set me up to communicate well and work with the women and families I now care for.
The staff and tutors at Surrey were extremely supportive throughout my training. I thoroughly enjoyed my time as a student.
What do you do now? How did your degree from Surrey help you achieve this?
I am passionate about midwifery because of the maternity care I received as a teen mother. The midwives who took care of me inspired me to want to pass it on to others, as many other teen mothers I knew or met throughout life had had negative experiences and felt judged by those caring for them.
I now work as a midwife in the acute unit, mainly the delivery suite. Surrey not only taught me the basics but helped me to be able to recognise the abnormal. The course provided me with all the skills and knowledge required to fulfil my role.
What’s your advice to current students?
Always focus on the normal; you are not expected to know everything. Once you know normal and can confidently escalate the abnormal, you get support with the rest. Every day is a learning day in the world of midwifery. Nobody knows it all. And I advise anyone who has the opportunity to use the Clinical Simulation Centre to make the most of it – it was a great asset to mastering my clinical skills.
