Why did you choose to do a foundation year?

To strengthen my understanding of economics and improve my mathematics before entering first year.

What did you enjoy about it?

I particularly enjoyed the Mathematic Methods and Applications module. I got to see how exactly maths and economics intersect; it brought a new perspective to the subject.

What support have you received at Surrey?

The support I have received from all my lecturers this year has been invaluable. From one-to-one sessions helping me understand challenging material to providing career advice for the future, their support has consistently gone above and beyond.

How has your foundation year had an impact on you?

My foundation year has had a significant impact on both my confidence and approach to learning. During my A-levels, I often fell behind because I was hesitant to ask questions when I didn't understand something. However, throughout my foundation year, my lecturers created an environment where questions were actively encouraged and made it clear that there was no such thing as a "dumb question". 

What advice do you have for students thinking of doing a foundation year?

Never be afraid to ask for help! If there's something you don't understand, speak up and ask questions. Even if you're not comfortable asking in class, lecturers and tutors are always willing to help through one-to-one sessions.
