The best thing about my placement was realising how much I could grow when given responsibility and the opportunity to contribute to meaningful work.

Describe your placement experience.

My placement year at Asset Management One International was a transformational period filled with growth, excitement, and real responsibility. I developed as a regulatory professional through trade comparison work, audit coordination, policy updates, and daily compliance checks, which strengthened my analytical skills and helped me think more critically.

What were the best things about it?

The best part of my placement was the strong sense of achievement that came from doing work that genuinely mattered. I delivered the latest version of the firm’s trade-comparison method, which improved internal oversight and strengthened the way our team reviewed trading data. I updated and delivered more than seventy policies to global teams within a tight deadline, which became a milestone moment in my development. I also supported senior colleagues during an external audit, which helped me build professionalism and trust.

The cultural events and corporate celebrations added excitement to the year and helped me feel deeply connected to the firm. Overall, the best thing about my placement was realising how much I could grow when given responsibility and the opportunity to contribute to meaningful work.

Have your career plans been informed by your placement?

Yes, absolutely. My placement confirmed that I want to pursue a career in the finance sector, particularly in regulation and compliance. During the year I was exposed to key industry areas such as AI development, trading processes, contractual analysis and sustainability initiatives, all of which helped me understand where my strengths and interests align.

What advice do you have for students considering doing a placement?

Please apply, especially to roles that feel outside your comfort zone. The opportunities that challenge you will become the moments that shape you the most. Aim high, because the rewards are genuinely high when you push yourself into ambitious environments. Stay curious, stay open, and take every chance to get involved — the right placement will transform your confidence and your career direction.

A placement year gives you growth you cannot get in the classroom.
