Parental advice
The first few weeks at university are an important period of adjustment. Students are often busy making friends, settling into accommodation and adapting to a new routine, so they may not contact home as frequently as before. This is often a positive sign that they are growing in confidence and independence.
Giving your student time and space to settle can help them build friendships, establish routines and feel part of the university community. Open discussions about communication expectations can help both of you find a balance that works, while respecting their growing independence.
Students may experience homesickness, anxiety or uncertainty as they adjust to university life. You can support them by listening without judgement, encouraging them to talk about their experiences, reassuring them that challenges are normal and signposting them to support services when needed.
It is also important to look after your own wellbeing during this transition. Mixed emotions are normal, so make time for activities you enjoy, stay connected with friends and family, and seek support if needed.
Key messages:
- Encourage independence while remaining supportive.
- Agree realistic expectations for contact.
- Give your student time to settle into university life.
- Listen and reassure rather than trying to solve every problem.
- Prioritise your own wellbeing as well as supporting your student.
