IET Healthcare Lecture provides platform for two Surrey graduates

Two graduates from Surrey’s Department of Mechanical Engineering Sciences – both winners of a 2016 IET Healthcare Technologies Award – will present their research on the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease using innovative signal processing technologies at the IET Annual Healthcare Lecture.

The two graduates speaking at the Lecture event are Samantha Simons (winner of the William James Award 2016 for best PhD student paper), who studied on Surrey’s MEng Biomedical Engineering programme, and William Hawkes (winner of the Dennis Hill Award 2016 for best MEng or MSc final project), who studied for the MSc Biomedical Engineering

The IET (Institution of Engineering and Technology) Annual Healthcare Lecture will take place on 22 November at IET London in Savoy Place, and is organised by the Healthcare Technologies Network.

The advent of wearable technology and the emergence of the Internet of Things (IoT) means that in the future, we will become ‘hyperconnected’. At the same time, the healthcare sector faces massive pressure driven by an ageing population and changing patterns of disease. The IET Annual Healthcare Lecture will highlight the coming together of next generation internet technology and healthcare, and the implications for individuals, healthcare and social care organisations, government and suppliers. This theme is a key focus for Surrey with its Engineering for Health programme and the opening of its £12.5m Innovation for Health Learning Laboratory.

At the IET Lecture, keynote speaker Chris Lewis, an experienced telecoms industry analyst and a specialist in disability and accessibility, will speak on ‘When the hyper-connected individual meets the healthcare sector’. Samantha Simons will present her prize-winning paper on the analysis of brain signals using advanced signal processing techniques to help in the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease, while William Hawkes will talk about his characterisation work on patients with Alzheimer’s disease using wavelets.

Dr Daniel Abasolo of Surrey’s Department of Mechanical Engineering Sciences, who will welcome guests to the Lecture, commented, “I am very proud to see two former students from the Department winning much-deserved Awards for their work, and getting the chance to share this important research with an audience of medical engineering professionals.”
