Rodgers & Hammerstein Theatricals license 'Bakewell Bake Off' musical

Continuing success for the baking-themed musical comedy created by University of Surrey MA Musical Theatre students at the Guildford School of Acting.

The remarkable success of a cake-based musical comedy continues with the news that Rodgers & Hammerstein Theatricals are to license Bakewell Bake Off for performances in the UK and Europe.

Set amid the petty rivalries of a good old-fashioned small-town baking competition, cut-throat business ambitions take over when a bureaucrat insists that only one cake recipe can bear the name 'Bakewell'.

The show was originally written by students on the MA Musical Theatre programme at Guildford School of Acting, part of the University of Surrey. After successful performances at the University, the production transferred to London, first at Waterloo East Theatre and then at The Landor Theatre. The Original Cast Recording was released on CD by SimG Productions, and now the joys of musical baking can be shared by a much wider live audience.

"It is a real achievement that a piece written as coursework gets this kind of development and honour," said Julian Woolford, Head of MA Musical Theatre and also Director of the original production.
