Surrey academic appointed to Wales Tourism Advisory Board

Professor Nigel Morgan, Chair in Hospitality and Tourism Management at the University of Surrey, has been appointed to the Welsh Government’s Tourism Advisory Board.

Responsible for working with the Welsh Government to take forward the country’s new tourism strategy, the Wales Tourism Advisory Board consists mainly of business people with expertise and an established reputation in the tourism sector.

The Board will advise Edwina Hart - the Welsh Government’s Minister for the Economy, Science and Transport - and scrutinise Visit Wales, ensuring that the views and priorities of the industry help inform policy development.

Tourism is a priority sector for the Welsh Government and is worth £5 billion a year to the Welsh economy.

Professor Morgan is an energetic advocate for the sustainable and inclusive development and marketing of cities, regions and countries. He is a widely published academic and is Professor of Tourism & Events Marketing at the University’s School of Hospitality and Tourism Management.

Professor Morgan commented: “I’m delighted to be appointed to the Advisory Board. This is a crucial period for domestic tourism in the UK and I’m looking forward to bringing my expertise in tourism destination and events marketing to the work of the board.”

A rare academic appointment to the Board, Professor Morgan’s period of office runs from 16 January 2014 to 15 January 2017.
