Advanced Techniques for Millimetre-Wave, Wireless Communication Systems
High-throughput millimetre wave (mm-wave) wireless transmission is expected to play a pivotal role in future communications systems and networks, including 5G. The PhD student will contribute to the development and proof-of-concept validation of advanced techniques for millimetre-wave communications, and will closely work with members of the Electromagnetics Technologies group at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL).

The PhD studentship will be funded by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL). It covers the tuition fees and a stipend.
The 5G Innovation Centre (5GIC) at University of Surrey is offering a PhD studentship in the filed of Advanced Techniques for Millimeter-Wave, Wireless Communication Systems.
5GIC is world’s first research center dedicated to the advanced technologies that will underpin the 5G network of the future. The Centre is working in partnership with some of the world’s leading mobile network operators, infrastructure and tools providers, media and communications organisations, such as, BBC, BT, Cobham, EE, Fujitsu Laboratories of Europe, Huawei, Rhode & Schwarz, Samsung, Telefonica, Teoco and Vodafone, as well as the UK’s communications regulator, OFCOM. The Centre is carrying out world-leading research into higher-capacity lower-energy mobile-communication networks.
Candidates should hold a first or upper-second class Bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree at distinction level (or equivalent experience/qualifications) in an appropriate discipline. They should have an aptitude and suitable background for conducting research in the field of future wireless communications systems. They are expected to have a very good understanding of communications systems, PHY signal processing techniques and RF/antennas. Prior experience with signal processing techniques for millimetre-wave communications (e.g., beamforming, beamtracking algorithms) and/or with test and measurement instrumentation and proof-of-concept platforms are highly desirable.
