Applications are invited for a 3-year, fully funded PhD studentship to study the role of extracellular vesicles in cardiovascular disease.

Communication between cardiac cells plays an important role in cardiac function and disease. However, molecular mechanisms of cardiac cell-cell communication remain poorly understood. Recently, extracellular vesicles have emerged as important players in cell communication in the heart, where they promote pathological hypertrophy. This project will investigate the role that extracellular vesicles play on heart function and structure with focus on the contribution of vesicles to initiation and progression of heart failure and vesicles molecular composition. The results could identify novel therapeutic targets for heart failure patients.

The successful candidate will be trained in relevant methods and procedures, including cell culture, extracellular vesicles purification and characterisation, molecular biology/protein isolation and characterization, cardiac electrophysiology, advanced microscopy and proteomics.

The proposed work will be carried out in the laboratories of Dr Patrizia Camelliti and Prof John McVey in the School of Biosciences and Medicine at the University of Surrey, in collaboration with Prof Aled Clayton at Cardiff University.

This is a 3 year project, commencing in October 2021.

Eligibility criteria

We are looking for a graduate who is enthusiastic and strongly motivated. A true interest in research as well as excellent communication, organizational and language skills are essential. MSc and/or research experience is not essential but would be very advantageous.

A First or Upper Second Class Honours degree from the UK (or equivalent qualification from international institutions) in a relevant subject area.

An IELTS Academic of 6.5 or above with 6 in each individual category (or equivalent qualification from other agencies).

This studentship is available for UK, EU and international students.

How to apply

Applications should be submitted via the Biosciences and Medicine PhD course page.

In your application, please clearly state the studentship title and supervisor to be considered. Instead of a project proposal, upload a cover letter indicating why you have applied and what you hope to achieve by undertaking this PhD. Your CV should include your course modules and marks (including predicted grade if you are in your final year).
