PhD studentship within DECaDE: Centre for the Decentralized Digital Economy. AI/Computer Vision/Blockchain.

We seek applications from enthusiastic, self-motivated students for up to three funded PhD studentships within the recently funded £10M EPSRC Centre for the Decentralized Digital Economy (DECaDE), led by the Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP) at the University of Surrey and in partnership with the University of Edinburgh, the Digital Catapult, and over 30 industry and public sector partners.

Start date

1 April 2021

Duration

3.5 years

Application deadline

Funding source

CVSSP Internal match funded studentship associated with the recently granted EPSRC DECaDE Centre.

Funding information

Funding will provide an annual tax-free stipend at the current EPSRC funding rate of approximately £15,000 and coverage of the home/EU tuition fees for 3.5 years. Based at Surrey.

About

The PhD will build upon the activities of prior EPSRC funded projects within CVSSP that combine AI and distributed ledger technology such as ARCHANGEL, COMEHERE, TAPESTRY and integrates with the recently funded £10M EPSRC DECADE centre with opportunities to work with several industry partners. The PhD topic may explore federated machine learning, computer vision and visual analytics, multi-modal signal processing, and distributed ledger technologies such as Blockchain.

The student will be based at CVSSP in the UK with opportunity for internship and travel to DECaDE centre partners during the course of the PhD.  Funded doctoral research projects will investigate the potential for decentralized platforms to transform the Digital Economy, particularly looking at Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies application in distributed systems and data.  Research topics include federated machine learning (FML), computer vision and visual analytics, machine learning over distributed sensor networks, AI for distributed media, and the intersection AI and cyber security.

CVSSP is a leading UK research centre in audio-visual signal processing, computer vision and machine learning ranked 2nd in Europe for Computer Vision. Our Centre is one of the largest in Europe with over 140 researchers and a grant portfolio in excess of £18.5million, bringing together a unique combination of cutting-edge sound and vision expertise.   DECaDE offers an enhanced 3.5 year doctoral training programme to address industry demand for individuals with cross-disciplinary scientific expertise in AI and Distributed Systems,  working in teams with integrated professional skills in software, project management, innovation and understanding of ethics and regulation of AI and data science research.
