Report

There are a variety of ways you can report instances of abuse, assaults, bullying, harassment, hate crimes, sexual misconduct and stalking, either to the University or to an external party.

Staff, students and visitors

Bullying, harassment, and sexual misconduct are not tolerated at the University of Surrey. All staff, students and visitors to the University can make a report either with contact details or anonymously.

Who can I report to?

Report + Support

All staff, students and visitors to the University can make a report using our Report + Support tool, either with contact details or anonymously.

What happens when I submit a report?

When your report is submitted, it will be sent to a small team of trained University staff who oversee the Report + Support service. A member of this team will complete a triage of your case and determine who is best placed to assist you with the issues you have raised. If you have asked for the University to take action, and have provided contact details, your report will typically be assigned to an appropriate member of staff within the University, who will then contact you to discuss the next steps.

Further information on next steps can be found in the Investigation section of this site.

Emergency services

If you require immediate emergency assistance, call 999 for the emergency services, which are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

If you would like to make a formal report to the police regarding a case of harassment or sexual misconduct, there are multiple routes on offer:

  • Call 101: If you prefer to talk to someone, call the national non-emergency number 101 to report what happened or get advice
  • Report online: You can report online through the police website, and your report will be handled as if you spoke to an officer directly.
  • Visit a police station: You can also visit a local police station to report in person.

If you choose to make a report to the police, the University will pause its internal investigations while there are ongoing criminal proceedings. However, we can still put temporary restrictions in place if appropriate.

We also encourage the student/staff member to notify the University of any criminal proceedings. This allows the University to consider potential next steps and for appropriate support to be provided.
