Surrey students and staff are actively involved in our local community, taking part in a wide range of volunteering activities throughout the year. Our Students’ Union Community Zone brings the student community together, integrating them into the local community, and ensuring that there are volunteering opportunities available for all students. The Investing in Volunteers Quality Standard has recognised the excellent work they do with volunteers.
University-wide volunteering and charitable campaigns take place throughout the year. Three recent examples include:
- Staff and students giving up their time to volunteer for local charities
- Surrey Technology Centre, based on the University’s Research Park, offering local, registered charities free meeting rooms during evenings and weekends
- The University partnering with the British Heart Foundation and Guildford Borough Council on a large-scale annual campaign to donate unwanted goods left in student rooms when they move out. In 2015 our staff and students donated over 9,000 charity bags, estimated to have raised £192,000 to help fund the BHF’s life-saving work.

Community Reps Scheme
Do you have University of Surrey students living in your area? There is a team of student volunteer community reps that is expanding each year to cover more and more of Guildford. They are here to help with issues you may face relating to students or that we can help with.
What is a Community Rep?
Run through our Students Union Community Zone, the Community Rep scheme aims to provide a student representative for each ward in Guildford (listed below). The Community Reps role is to listen to residents (students and non-students), and help raise any local issues with the University, Guildford Borough Council (and other organistations) that they come across, providing a vital link to create a stronger more cohesive community between all those who live in and around Guildford.
The Wards where we aim to have a rep in each year are:
- Friary and St. Nicholas
- Holy Trinity
- Stag Hill
- Manor Park
- Hazel Farm
- Commuter community
Typical Community Rep activities include:
- Recieving and responding to emails from local residents.
- Representing the views of students at meetings with local councillors alongside other community reps and the VP Community.
- Gathering student and non-student opinion in the Ward that they are representing that may be relevant to the University, VP Community or other stakeholders.
- Attend Residents' Association meetings as an ambassador for the Students' Union and University.
- Deliver Community Rep flyers to engage and generate contct with local residents.
Street Marshals - a trial scheme
This trial scheme operates with the aim of safeguarding students and local residents as they travel through the adjacent residential neighbourhoods to our Stag Hill campus at night, promoting positive community relationships by encouraging students and local residents to behave responsibly whilst walking through these areas.
The University of Surrey Lettings (USL) agency is a not-for-profit lettings service which was established in November 2016. USL was formed as part of an initiative by the Students' Union who felt there was a clear need for the University of Surrey to provide a comprehensive advice and support service to students renting off campus. The USL partnership incorporates the Students' Union and Student Support Services Centre.
Alongside student support, USL also manage the University's head leasing scheme which enables the University to rent properties to students without charging any fees. USL are dedicated to providing students with a fair deal and landlords with a professional service. We also offer landlords the ability to advertise their property directly to University of Surrey students on our secure Studentpad website.
University of Surrey Lettings (USL) manage the head leasing scheme which allows private landlords to rent their property directly to the University as their tenant. In turn, the property is then sublet to continuing students.
The USL team bring a wealth of industry experience and are always here to support in any way we can.
