The School of Literature and Languages offers English language courses before the start of the academic year for students who do not have the required level of English to join a degree programme directly, or for students who wish to improve their English language skills and confidence in their ability before the start of their programme.
If you have not met the English requirement for your degree course, you will receive information about the Pre-sessional English programmes with your offer through the Applicant portal.
English support during your studies
The School of English and Languages offers an English Language Support Programme (ELSP) to all students registered at the University of Surrey. The ELSP is free of charge and is particularly useful for students who, although they have already met the University’s entry requirements in English, feel they need further help with communication in the language for their studies.
The programme can help if you:
- Lack confidence in your use of English
- Have specific language difficulties which might affect your academic performance
- Wish to practise and improve your study skills
- Have never studied in the UK before
At the beginning of your course, normally during Welcome Week, all international students will be invited to take some diagnostic English tests to help us identify any course which you are most likely to benefit from. It is advised that you attend these on a weekly basis.
