Clean air must be recognised as a basic human right, say Surrey researchers
To mark Clean Air Day (19 June), Professor Prashant Kumar, founding Director of the University of Surrey’s Global Centre for Clean Air Research (GCARE), shares his thoughts on why air pollution remains one of the most urgent environmental and public health challenges of our time – and how science and innovation can help us tackle it.

“Clean Air Day serves as a vital reminder that air pollution remains one of the most pressing environmental and public health challenges of our time. Whether it’s traffic congestion, industrial emissions or poor indoor ventilation, the air we breathe can have a significant impact on our health, especially for children and vulnerable groups.
“At the University of Surrey’s Global Centre for Clean Air Research (GCARE), every day is Clean Air Day, where we turn cutting-edge science into real-world solutions for better air quality and a healthier planet.
“The GCARE team I lead bridges the gap between research and action, working with communities, policymakers, and innovators to tackle air pollution and climate change. From using low-cost sensors and AI to monitor and predict pollution hotspots, to designing smart green infrastructure that shields school playgrounds and busy streets, we’re pioneering practical ways to make our cities safer and more sustainable.
“Our projects – including the RECLAIM Network Plus, GREENIN Micro Network Plus, and GP4Streets – involve hundreds of collaborators worldwide, setting new standards for clean air research and driving policy change in the UK and beyond.
“This Clean Air Day, we’re calling for clean air to be recognised not as a privilege, but as a basic human right. Together, through science, innovation, and community collaboration, we can build a future where everyone breathes easier.”
