University of Surrey to host prestigious European veterinary microbiology conference

In recognition of its growing reputation as a centre of excellence in microbiology, the University of Surrey has been selected to host the 8th International Conference of the European College of Veterinary Microbiology.

Taking place in September (2nd- 4th), the University is delighted to welcome Professor Brendan Wren from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and Professor Sarah Cleaveland from the University of Glasgow as keynote speakers. Keynote lectures will explore the topics of veterinary vaccines and one health and emerging zoonoses.

Professor Roberto La Ragione, Interim Pro-Vice Chancellor and Executive Dean for the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences and Professor of Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology at the University of Surrey, said:

“The rise of zoonotic diseases highlights the fragility of human and animal health and how intrinsically linked they are. Bringing the scientific community together to discuss these matters and showcase advances in the area, is a crucial first step in protecting human and animal health.

“We are delighted to be hosting this international conference here at Surrey. Our growing expertise in One Health is built upon our strong foundation in microbiology and veterinary research and is further strengthened by the opening of our new medical school, so that we are covering both human and animal health.”

The Conference’s Organising Committee are now accepting submissions (until 30 April) for talks and posters on a number of different topics, including antimicrobial resistance and emerging bacterial diseases.
