Dr Eirini Velliou
About
Biography
Dr Eirini Velliou is Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) of Bioprocess & Tissue Engineering, Principal Investigator and Founder of the Bioprocess and Biochemical Engineering group (BioProChem) in the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering at the University of Surrey. Her research focus falls within the engineering and validation of novel biomaterial based in vitro platforms for studying various biological systems and diseases, i.e., cancer, stem cells expansion and differentiation, formulation and communication of bacterial communities and bacterial-host interactions. Furthermore, she is particularly interested in the response and adaptation-resistance of biological systems to environmental stress.
Eirini joined the University of Surrey in September 2014 after a 2 years appointment as Research Fellow at Imperial College London (Centre for Process Systems Engineering & Biological Systems Engineering laboratory) where she worked with Profs Pistikopoulos & Mantalaris on tissue engineering for healthy & diseased (leukaemia) blood.
Prior to joining Imperial College Eirini spend 5 years doing research in Belgium.
She worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the research group of Prof Spiros Agathos (Bioengineering Group, GEBI) at the Earth and Life Institute (ELI) of the Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL) in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium. Driven by her passion to understand how biological systems react under the impact of environmental stress she focused on the optimisation of biofuel and carotenoid production from micro-algae in solid state under light stress, mechanical stress and nutrient deprivation.
Eirini holds a PhD from KU Leuven, Belgium (2012-Department of Chemical Engineering), where she worked on an integrated in vitro/in silico approach for predicting microbial environmental stress adaptation phenomena in liquid state and in viscoelastic biomaterials under the supervision of Profs Jan Van Impe, Annemie Geeraerd & Frank Devlieghere.
Eirini holds a Masters in Chemical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Greece (2006). Her masters dissertation was on the design and validation of time-temperature enzymatic and microbial integrators (TTI), and was conducted under the supervision of Prof Petros Taoukis. Following the completion of her masters and before leaving for Belgium, Eirini spent a year working as a research engineer in the laboratory of Prof Taoukis at NTUA, working on (ii) TTI design and (ii) design and formulation of nanoemulsions.
