Practice environment

Our practice placements are divided into localities so that our students get to know local healthcare providers and services within an area.

Practice placement localities

Once out in practice, local educational practitioners and Practice Learning teaching fellows from the University support student learning and the mentors who are supporting the students.

Students are allocated to one locality for the duration of their programme. This enables students to become familiar with the local area and the placement opportunities in the locality, thus fostering a sense of belonging in that community.

Localities vary from course to course to provide a variety of learning experiences. You can find out more about programme specific localities on our health sciences, nursing and midwifery subject pages.

Practice placements partnerships

Students from the School of Health Sciences have the opportunity to complete placements across health care institutions, including:

Support in practice

When students are undertaking practice learning experiences, mentors will facilitate learning and development. In addition, within the acute and community trusts, there are nurses who oversee placements and learning experiences and are available to support and advise students.

Practice liaison teachers

Practice liaison teachers support students from each field of nursing. They are able to advise students and mentors about practice-related issues.
