Entry year
2024What do you like about your course and why?
The forensic investigation aspect of my course provides me with essential skills for work as a crime scene investigator (CSI) or as part of law enforcement. We’ve been taught techniques to swab and collect blood, as well as the recovery of evidence like screwdrivers or glass fragments.
One of the optional modules that I've selected for this year is the ‘Crime and Technology’ module. This module discusses what is considered technology, how it has evolved over time and what technology actually is. The module has left me questioning what counts as technology and has me thinking critically about how these technologies have been used, or can be used, by individuals.
The course has provided me with opportunities to hear from guest lecturers offering insights into their career paths and real-world experiences.
What do you enjoy most about Surrey?
The landscape in Surrey is extremely beautiful, a place for me that provided the most tranquility and immersion in nature would have to be the lake on campus.
Sociology is full of friendly lecturers and staff who are very supportive and always willing to help. The student union on campus organises a variety of events for students, ranging from freshers to third years. These include things like freshers fairs, Thursday markets and film nights.
The societies at Surrey offer new opportunities to develop skills, make friends both on your course and from other departments, and try new sports and activities.
What do you want to do when you graduate?
When I graduate I’m keeping my options open and I haven’t yet settled upon an idea. However, I’m considering that a possible path I may take would be working with or as a police officer or working within the field of forensics. This is because I have always been interested in the area of forensics and public service, and these opportunities would give me the ability to help other people and give back to communities in a meaningful way.
