Describe your placement experience.

My placement is due to begin in July with the Office for Students, where I will be working as a Data Scientist within the Analytical Innovation team. Although I haven't started my placement yet, I am really looking forward to transitioning from academic learning to applying my skills in a real-world environment. Through my MSc in Data Science, I have developed a strong foundation in areas such as data analysis, machine learning, and data visualisation, and I am eager to see how these translate into practical impact.

The placement is designed to provide exposure across the full data lifecycle, including working with data pipelines, preparing and modelling data, and contributing to analytical and AI-driven solutions. I am particularly excited about the opportunity to work across different teams during rotations, which will allow me to gain a broader understanding of how data science operates within an organisation. This experience will be a key step in building both my technical capabilities and my confidence in a professional setting.

What are you looking forward to during your placement?

One of the things I am most looking forward to is working with real-world data and understanding how it is used to support decision-making. In academic settings, we often work with structured or curated datasets, but I am excited to experience the challenges of handling real, complex data and developing solutions that have practical value.

I am also really looking forward to learning from experienced professionals and understanding industry best practices, tools, and workflows. The opportunity to rotate across different areas, such as data analysis, data science, and potentially data engineering, is something I find particularly exciting, as it will help me explore different career paths within the field. Additionally, I am keen to develop my communication skills by working with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

"Through the structure of the placement, particularly the exposure to different parts of the data lifecycle, I have developed a clearer interest in pursuing a career as a data scientist."

Have your career plans been informed by your placement?

Yes, securing this placement has already played an important role in shaping my career direction. While I have always been interested in data science, this opportunity has helped me better understand the different roles within the field and the skills required to succeed in each of them.

Through the structure of the placement, particularly the exposure to different parts of the data lifecycle, I have developed a clearer interest in pursuing a career as a data scientist. I am especially interested in roles that involve analysing data, building models, and generating insights that can support real-world decisions. I think this placement will give me greater clarity, motivation, and confidence in working towards a long-term career in data science.

What advice do you have for students considering doing a placement?

I would strongly encourage students to pursue a placement because it provides a valuable opportunity to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry expectations. My advice would be to start preparing early by building practical skills, working on personal or academic projects, and applying consistently, as the process can be competitive.

As an international student, I have found that there can be additional challenges, such as adapting to a new environment, understanding the job market, and navigating application processes. However, making use of university resources, seeking guidance, and staying persistent can make a significant difference.

Most importantly, be open to learning, stay proactive, and take every opportunity to develop both your technical and professional skills.
