Getting a placement opportunity in the field of Data Engineering has been a very positive and exciting experience for me. The process involved multiple interview stages, technical assessments, and discussions with industry professionals, which helped me better understand industry expectations and improve my confidence throughout the journey. Through this experience, I was able to connect the concepts learned during my MSc in Data Science with real-world applications and business workflows.
The placement journey also pushed me to improve my technical knowledge in areas such as data processing, cloud systems, analytics, and large-scale operational workflows. Alongside technical growth, it helped me strengthen my communication, presentation, and problem-solving skills, especially while explaining technical approaches during interviews and assessments.
One of the most valuable aspects of the experience was understanding how companies evaluate candidates not only on technical ability, but also on critical thinking, adaptability, and communication skills. It gave me a clearer picture of how industry teams collaborate and how data-driven systems are managed in real environments.

What were the best things about it?
One of the best things about the placement experience was seeing how the concepts learned during the MSc course are applied in real industry environments. It was exciting to interact with professionals working on real-time systems and understand how teams collaborate on large-scale projects, operational workflows, and data-driven decision-making.
I also enjoyed the overall journey of preparing for interviews, technical tasks, and professional discussions, as it pushed me to improve both technically and personally. The process helped me become more confident in problem-solving, communication, and presenting my ideas clearly in technical conversations.
Another great aspect was understanding the expectations of the industry and how important practical skills, adaptability, and continuous learning are in real-world roles. Receiving an offer in a field closely aligned with my interests and previous experience made the entire experience very motivating, rewarding, and encouraging for my future career.

The placement experience has significantly shaped my career plans and given me a much clearer direction for my future.
I want to build my career in the fields of Data Engineering and Analytics. Understanding how large-scale data pipelines, real-time systems, cloud infrastructure, and operational data workflows are managed in industry further strengthened my interest in this domain and motivated me to deepen my technical expertise.
Through the interview process, technical assessments, and discussions with industry professionals, I was able to better understand how data engineering, analytics, and operational systems work together in real-world environments.
The placement journey highlighted the importance of scalable systems, practical problem-solving, collaboration, and industry-focused technical skills alongside machine learning and analytics. Overall, it has motivated me to continue developing deeper expertise in data-driven technologies and real-world applications.
What advice do you have for students considering doing a placement?
My advice for students considering a placement would be to start applying early and explore opportunities through different platforms such as Gradcracker, Surrey Pathfinder, LinkedIn, and company career pages. Be proactive in networking connect with professionals on LinkedIn and don’t hesitate to reach out to employers directly regarding opportunities.
The best advice I’d give to anyone studying Data Science is to actively apply the knowledge you learn throughout the course. Taking part in real projects not only improves understanding of the concepts but also provides practical experience that stands out during placement and graduate role applications.
It is also very important to continuously improve your CV, cover letter, technical knowledge, and critical thinking skills. The support I received from the Employability Team was very helpful , especially with CV reviews, interview preparation, and improving professional communication skills. Having a university that provides strong support systems, resources, and opportunities for practical learning greatly enhanced my overall student experience and career preparation.
