Your time at Surrey

Why did you choose to study at the University of Surrey?

Firstly, Surrey is one of the best universities for my field of studies, Psychology, and provides students with every academic need that they may require during their studies. The professors and lecturers are all professional and supportive, helping students every step of the way.

The campus is beautiful. Some of my best memories at Surrey were made relaxing by the lake on campus when the weather was nice before returning to my studies.

Guildford is an amazing location for students. It is close to London, and the campus itself is situated just outside of Guildford’s town centre where there are so many things a student can do – from shopping, eating at restaurants, to exploring the historical castle and nature of the area!

What were the best things about your course?

One of the best things about my course was its structure. The modules taught me essential academic knowledge and developed year on year. Even now during my higher level of studies, I still come across knowledge that I acquired from my BSc in Psychology at Surrey, which is a great indication of Surrey’s academic excellence

I was never just a passive receiver of knowledge at Surrey – I always felt like an active learner collaborating with my lecturers on this journey to become a psychologist. This for me is one of the greatest achievements of the teaching quality at Surrey and is exactly what every university needs to aspire to be - a place where students not only learn from their professors but are empowered to become active members and researchers in the profession they have chosen.

Another great thing about my course was the support from staff. My thesis supervisor, Dr Fabio Fasoli, supported me even after my graduation by helping me publish my BSc thesis on Acta Psychologica, an open access journal. This experience helped me understand how things work in academia, equipping me well for my academic development within my Masters and now my PhD.

Life after Surrey

What are you doing now?

At the moment, I am at start of my PhD in Psychology at the European University of Cyprus. It has always been my dream to discover many fields of Psychology since it is such a multifaceted profession. In my PhD, I really enjoy that I can do exactly that - explore even more parts of Psychology and expand my expertise and skills within the field.

How has your time at Surrey helped you get to where you are now?

Surrey has provided me with multiple skills, knowledge and experience. From training on statistical tests necessary for psychological research and modules on qualitative research, to practical skills in presentation, communication and decision making, my degree has been so useful for my personal and academic development.

What is your advice for students aspiring to work in your profession?

Always study what you enjoy.  Many types of Psychology may lead to finding a job more easily, but this does not mean that you will necessarily be happier if you are following a path that does not excite you!

I always thought I would focus on social or developmental psychology and find a job within these fields. However, for my PhD, I discovered a part of health psychology that I found more exciting and impactful, and I chose to dive into this new topic. Whilst this was scary at first, I feel more motivated and excited about my studies and career path than ever before.

You should always remember the reason that made you want to start this journey, empower yourself through the easier and the tougher times, and strive to achieve all the goals and dreams that you have set your mind to.

Wishing everyone studying at Surrey a wonderful student experience. The best is yet to come!
