Course
Paramedic Science BScWhat were the best things about your course?
During my time at the University of Surrey, COVID was in full force. The Paramedic teaching team utilised every opportunity to promote our successes. We had a rich mix of academic lectures, simulation and multidisciplinary placements to develop our strengths and capabilities and support the transition to practice.
What do you do now? How did your degree from Surrey help you achieve this?
I am currently a Specialist Operations Response Team (SORT) Paramedic, keeping a regular portfolio of training to remain an active deployable asset to critical and national terror and chemical incidents.
I am also about to complete my PGCert in Practice Development (masters level) awarded by the University of Cumbria. Fundamentally, my development at the University of Surrey paved the way for my continuing academic career, which I anticipate will bring me to complete my full masters over the next few years.
My three years at Surrey also promoted the importance of a work–life balance, and really making sure time is set aside for wellbeing and promoting positivity on what is a vastly challenging but rewarding course.
What’s your advice to current students?
Don't restrict yourself. The role of a paramedic is vast and given the challenges facing all NHS staff today, think ahead and go with what comes naturally. Work hard but be easy on yourself.
