Music MMusWhy did you choose to continue your postgraduate studies at Surrey, instead of another university?
The main reason that I chose to continue my postgraduate studies at Surrey is because I think the atmosphere of my department, the mode of teaching, the opportunities that I was offered, and the resources that the department provides are favourable to my learning journey. Music and Media is a friendly and cosy department. Not only do students collaborate among ourselves for projects, lecturers also work very closely with students. Students are always encouraged to ask questions and book in for tutorials for more guidance on our studies. The library is well-equipped with secondary resources with a fantastic inter-library loan service. Hence, we can get materials that we want promptly.
How did the university support you in your transition to becoming a postgraduate student?
During the application process, my tutors offered me a lot of suggestions on what to submit in my portfolio so that I could showcase my best qualities. My tutors also offered me reference letters that strengthened the application. At the start of the year, tutors also explained the quality of work they are looking for from a masters student and how we should attain that.
What have been the biggest benefits so far of continuing your studies at Surrey?
I think the biggest benefit of continuing my studies at Surrey is that I was offered an abundance of resources and opportunities to be in touch with well-known people in the industry through workshops and conferences; special thanks to my supervisor who provided me with a lot of materials and guidance. These opportunities allowed me to broaden my connections and emerge myself in the industry.
What advice would you give to a current Surrey undergraduate student who is thinking of staying for a masters?
Find something in your field that you are very passionate about. Look through the modules that the masters course offers and see whether it fits where your interest lies. At the end of the day, it is important that you have sufficient resources and support here at Surrey as the foundation of your new exploration.
What do you plan to do after graduating and how has your masters degree supported that?
After completing my masters, I have given myself time to explore a portfolio career as a professional singer, a singing coach, and a director, as well as part-time studying in refining my skill sets. I have currently prepared myself with an intensive performance-based training in preparation for conservatoire entry. I think my postgraduate studies have provided me with an insight and framework of what it is like to have a multi-faceted career. I can then model and elaborate on the framework once I graduate, and get myself into the industry.
