Psychology (Conversion) MScWhy did you choose to study at Surrey?
Having completed an undergraduate degree in law, I decided to complete the Psychology (Conversion) MSc at Surrey because I had the objective of going on to study sport psychology and Surrey was the best place for me. The teaching was excellent and I really felt supported by the lecturers and my supervisor.
What were the best things about your course?
I didn't have any experience in health sciences up to starting the masters so I really enjoyed acquiring new knowledge and skills every week. I particularly enjoyed conducting my research project in the field of sport psychology as that is the area of psychology and the career path that I wish to pursue.
I have a sporting background in figure skating so I decided to research elite athletes in aesthetic sports (figure skating, gymnastics and dance). The research explored psychological safety and the influence of negative coaching on the wellbeing of elite athletes in aesthetic sports. Research in psychological safety, especially within these sports, is much less common than other aspects but so important given the intersecting risks experienced by these athletes, who tend to become 'elite' at a very young age. My experience on this masters really set me up with the tools and skills to succeed with my research and I produced something I am proud of. I’m also delighted that the British Dance Sport Association featured my research on their website: ‘I am more than just an athlete’: Psychological safety and negative coaching in aesthetic sports.
What do you do now?
I am currently undertaking a second masters, in sport and exercise psychology at Loughborough University, with the goal of becoming a sport psychologist after my studies.
What’s your advice to current students who want to study the Psychology (Conversion) MSc?
My advice is to rely on the lecturers and staff as much as possible. If you have a question about anything, ask it; don't think you will just figure it out because they are so helpful and you will feel more confident by doing so. Extra reading also helps you become more confident in the topics covered and ultimately makes you a better and more knowledgeable student.
