Course
Healthcare Practice BScWhat do you like about your course and why?
I trained as a mental health nurse in the early 1990s (Project 2000) and did not think, at that time, that a degree would ever be available to me. I completed various CPD modules and courses over the years, and my focus was on work and then family. I made one attempt at a degree pathway, but for various reasons, it ended early.
In 2023, I was offered the opportunity to apply for funding via my employer (Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust), who were keen to sponsor a group of diploma nurses to study for a degree. I took the plunge and was successful with my application.
I was drawn towards this course as I liked the mix of modules available and was impressed by the website. My other university option was less appealing despite being significantly closer to my home in Sussex.
My modules have all been related to my practice and have encouraged me to consider my clinical role and how my studies can help me to develop my practice.
Right from the start of this course, I have been supported to believe in myself and my academic abilities, and my tutor, Hayley, has been my cheerleader.
I also feel connected to Surrey as I grew up not too far away and my mum studied to be a registered general nurse (RGN) at Guildford in my teens. Maybe I had a romanticised view, but to me, it felt like a full circle moment to study here.
"Academic support is available to you throughout the course with guidance and advice when needed, and it doesn't matter if you haven't studied for years. I promise you, you can do this."
What do you plan to do after graduating?
When I graduate, I initially anticipate cheering incredibly loudly and being proud of my achievement. As a mum to three teenage daughters, I want them to know you can achieve your goals at any point in life and that it's ok to try, stop and try again.
I will stay in my current clinical role and continue to support the development of this innovative, forward-thinking service that is noted as supporting parents to change their lives with positive outcomes for their families.
At this point, I am not certain if I will pursue further education for myself, but I have an active role in the training and development of social workers and key workers, sharing knowledge and expertise, which I am keen to continue to develop.
What advice would you give to anyone thinking of studying this course?
I would actively encourage all potential students to consider the University of Surrey and to explore the options available for modules. All of them can be relevant to your clinical area; you just need to be able to think outside of the box you may have put yourself in.
Academic support is available to you throughout the course with guidance and advice when needed, and it doesn't matter if you haven't studied for years. I promise you, you can do this.
If you are a mature student, as I am, I appreciate the self-doubt you may have, and if I only ever give one piece of advice, it would be to always believe in yourself. You are capable of more than you think.
