Amen Clinics, Atlanta, GeorgiaDescribe your placement experience.
I completed my Professional Training year at Amen Clinics in Atlanta, Georgia, working as a patient care coordinator in a multidisciplinary mental health team. I supported clinical assessments, managed electronic medical records, and observed brain imaging techniques such as SPECT and qEEG scans. I also learned about hyperbaric oxygen therapy and integrative treatment planning.
What were the best things about it?
The best part of my placement was gaining real clinical experience in an international setting. I got to see how psychology is applied in patient care, especially through brain imaging and integrative treatment approaches. I also really valued working with a diverse range of patients and professionals, which helped me develop confidence, cultural awareness, and a clearer understanding of my future career in clinical psychology.
Have your career plans been informed by your placement?
My placement definitely helped shape my career plans. Being part of a multidisciplinary team and seeing the impact of mental health treatment made me realise I want to continue gaining clinical experience after graduation and eventually pursue further training in clinical psychology.
What advice do you have for students considering doing a placement?
My biggest advice would be to take the placement year if you can and be proactive from the start. Placements are what you make of them, so ask questions, take opportunities, and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. It’s one of the best ways to build confidence, gain real-world experience, and work out what you want to do after university.
