"I genuinely love my course in mental health nursing because it focuses on understanding the whole person, not just their condition."

What do you like about your course and why?

I genuinely love my course in mental health nursing because it focuses on understanding the whole person, not just their condition. I’m passionate about supporting people through some of their most vulnerable moments, building therapeutic relationships, and advocating for better mental health care. I struggled with anorexia for most of my teens and adult life and spent time in eating disorder units, so being a mental health nurse is my chance to give back and support people, as I understand what it feels like. It feels like such a meaningful and rewarding career, and my placement has reinforced that I’m on the right path.

I’ve also been elected as a course rep, which has been a great opportunity to represent my fellow students, and I’ve made some good friends on the course along the way. And I love getting my morning coffee at the Kate Granger Building!

What have your clinical placements involved? What were the highlights?

I'm currently on my first placement. I’ve really been enjoying so far – it’s been such a valuable experience. Even though I’m training as a mental health nurse, I had the opportunity to do a physical health placement at the Royal Surrey Hospital, which has been amazing for building my confidence and broadening my skills. On the urology ward I worked with a wide range of patients, which helped me understand how physical and mental health are so closely linked. I’ve been able to practise and develop key clinical skills like taking observations, using a bladder scanner, and delivering holistic care tailored to each patient. I’ve really liked being part of the team and getting hands-on experience while learning how to communicate effectively with patients from different backgrounds. It’s helped me grow both personally and professionally.

What advice would you give to students thinking of studying your course?

Do it! Surrey is just brilliant and the course is second to none, I’ve made loads of new friends and been challenged in so many ways.
