Course
Adult Nursing BScWhat do you like about your course and why?
I chose to study Nursing at the University of Surrey after attending an offer holder day, and it honestly just felt right from the moment I arrived. I was really drawn to the incredible facilities, the way the course was delivered, and how confident and capable the students were. It was clear that Surrey truly believes in its students, and the range of placement opportunities on offer made me feel excited about the journey ahead. What I enjoy most about the course is how rewarding it is. I’ve always had a genuine interest in healthcare, and learning about something I’m truly passionate about makes a real difference. Being out on placement and seeing how the theory fits into real-life situations is such a powerful experience, it brings everything together. It’s a privilege to be part of people’s care during vulnerable moments, and that sense of purpose is what drives me every day.
What do you enjoy most about Surrey?
One of the things I enjoy most about Surrey is the campus life. Having access to both Manor Park and Stag Hill means there’s always something happening, whether it's student events, society activities, or simply the buzz of daily university life. It’s a really active and welcoming environment, and being part of that energy is something I genuinely love. I especially enjoy spending time by the lake on Stag Hill campus, particularly in the summer. It’s the perfect spot to relax, catch up with friends, or just take a breather between lectures. It really adds to the sense of community and calm that Surrey offers. I also really value the Kate Granger Building, where many of our lectures are held. The immersive clinical suite there gives us the chance to practise our skills in a simulated environment, which is an amazing way to prepare for placement and build confidence in a safe, supportive setting.
"The University has supported me in growing both personally and professionally, and I’m incredibly proud to call myself a Surrey student."
If you’ve completed a clinical placement, what did this involve? What were the highlights?
As part of the Nursing degree at Surrey, our time is split 50/50 between theory and clinical practice. This means that throughout the three years of the course, we spend a significant amount of time on placement in a variety of settings. I’ve particularly enjoyed the range of clinical experiences offered, including hospital wards, theatres, emergency departments, community nursing, and even placements in prisons. This variety has been incredibly valuable in helping me develop a broad set of skills and discover which areas of nursing I’m most passionate about. What I love about being out in practice is the opportunity to bring what I’ve learned in the classroom to life. It helps you grow in confidence and continually develop your skills so that you become a more capable and well-rounded nurse.
One of the highlights of my placements so far was my rotation in theatres, specifically working in anaesthetics. I found the theatre environment fascinating, and I really enjoyed learning about airway management and the complexities of anaesthetic medicine. It was a fast-paced and highly skilled setting, and it’s definitely one of my favourite placements to date.
What do you want to do when you graduate?
Once I graduate, I plan to apply for my Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Registration Pin, which will allow me to practise as a registered nurse in the UK. I haven’t yet decided on a specific area of nursing and I’m keeping an open mind. The wide range of placements I’ve experienced during my course has broadened my perspective and introduced me to areas I might not have initially considered. What I do know for certain is that I’ll be entering a profession that is both vital and in constant demand. No matter where I choose to work, there will always be a need for skilled, compassionate nurses and I’m excited to be part of that future.
What advice would you give to students thinking of studying your course?
Just come to University of Surrey and do it! You’ll fall in love with it. I did, and I can honestly say it’s been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Even thinking about graduating and closing this chapter of my life makes me emotional, because Surrey has become such a big part of who I am. The University has supported me in growing both personally and professionally, and I’m incredibly proud to call myself a Surrey student. If you’re thinking about studying nursing, I couldn’t recommend the School of Health Sciences more highly. The teaching, the placements, the facilities and the sense of community all make for an experience that’s truly special.
