A real highlight for me was having an article published in a well-known journal in my field. This came out of a chapter I wasn’t expecting to write at the start of the thesis, on a novel I read during the PhD.

I like the fact the Surrey allows you to have a 50/50 split between your two languages choices,  as that was something other universities didn’t offer. I also like that students are given a choice of subject for written assignments.

We have access to a huge range of books and materials, computers with specialised software for language learners, and staff on hand during the weekdays to provide support. The classrooms also boast features to support listening practice.

I like how there is such a broad variety of modules that can link with other disciplines such as sociology, criminology and politics.

Studying abroad has definitely helped me decide on my career path.

I have loved every second of my time at Surrey and how best to top it off with an amazing trip to Uganda.

PhD student, Fengmei Zhu, is based in the Surrey Institute of Education, carrying out research to improve students’ abilities of understanding, giving and receiving, as well as acting upon feedback to assist learning. Fengmei has conducted part of her research in the UK and is in China gathering more data. Here she explains her experience of studying as a PhD student at the University of Surrey.
