Choosing Surrey

My lifelong passion for literature and writing, and my literature teacher in high school sparking my interest, has naturally resulted in my desire to study English Literature. I’ve always been eager to study abroad and doing my undergraduate course at Surrey (2019-2022) is one of the best experiences I’ve had. I’m now doing my master’s degree here too.

The main reason for my decision to study at Surrey was the course structure and wide range of modules offered on the English Literature programme itself. Other factors (albeit not as important) were the university’s beautiful campus and Guildford’s proximity to London.

I was absolutely fascinated by the programme’s description on the website and the various module choices. I also found it very useful that every module was explained in detail in advance (e.g. reading list, type of assessments, expected deadlines, etc)

Your course

One of the most appealing features of this course is the diversity of modules it offers. They cover a broad range of disciplines, genres, and historical periods. I was thus able to undertake modules such as German-English Translation, TEFL, Women Behind the Screen, and From Novel to Film amongst many others. What is more, the course encourages us to think critically and question some literary conventions.

Staff and facilities

The staff are insightful, supportive, and passionate about the subject they’re teaching. The way in which they arouse and sustain our intellectual curiosity, their dedication and professionalism are truly inspiring. I’d like to express my sincere gratitude to my former dissertation supervisor, Dr Danielle Dove, for everything she’s done to support me.

In terms of facilities, the university library keeps numerous useful resources, which have been crucial to my assignments.

"The teaching staff are knowledgeable, kind, and supportive."

Your life here

During my undergraduate course, I was a member of the Bulgarian Society and the PetSoc. I also participated in the GGA in Languages. I’d been taking Spanish classes for three years (i.e. Spanish Stage 1, 2, and 3). This was one of the highlights of my undergraduate degree at Surrey as it allowed me to study a foreign language I’d been interested in learning for a long time.

For me, still, one of the best things about Surrey is the beautiful and big campus, surrounded by lovely trees and shrubs. I mostly

enjoy going for short walks in the campus park. Occasionally I read a book there or simply watch the birds and relax. Guildford’s proximity to London is an added bonus.

Looking back

My best moment at Surrey so far is my current course, as I thoroughly enjoy the modules I’m taking as well as the fruitful seminar discussions. My engagement in the GGA language programme was also great.

My experience at Surrey has allowed me to acquire a thorough knowledge in the field of English Literature, it has broadened my mind and made me a more well-rounded person. It has also helped me develop my critical thinking, multitasking skills, and ability to work under academic pressure.

Looking forward

My learning experience at Surrey has undoubtedly helped me advance my analytical thinking and time-management skills. As to personal development, I believe I’ve gained some self-confidence and become more self-reliant. After graduation, I’m interested in pursuing a teaching career.
