Leading engineer, Professor Paul Smith, appointed as new Executive Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences
The University of Surrey has appointed Professor Paul Smith as new Executive Dean of its internationally-renowned Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences.
- Executive Dean is responsible for nine departments within the faculty, and takes a leading role in the formulation of the academic strategy
- Distinguished academic is author on more than 250 journal and conference papers; he is Immediate Past President ICCM (International Committee on Composite Materials), a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining and a Chartered Engineer
- Through collaborations over many years Professor Smith has strong links with companies in several sectors core to the Faculty, which will help to guarantee relevance of degree programmes and equip Surrey graduates for careers at the cutting edge of their chosen field
Paul Smith is Professor of Composite Materials. He is an engineer by background, holding a first degree in engineering, from the University of Cambridge, where he subsequently carried out doctoral research on the mechanical fastening of carbon fibre reinforced composites. After joining the University of Surrey in 1986 as a Lecturer in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Paul was promoted to a Personal Chair in 1997 and served as Head of School of Engineering from 2004 – 2007. He has held his current role of Associate Dean (International) in FEPS since 2010, working to develop partnerships and promoting student mobility, both incoming and outgoing.

Paul will take up the new role from 01 September.
