Europeanisation of NATO: The European pillar and the future of U.S. engagement
The Centre for Britain and Europe co-hosted an event on 21 April at Woburn House to discuss the Europeanisation of NATO and the importance of the European pillar.
Professor Amelia Hadfield, Founding Director of the Centre for Britain and Europe, spoke on the panel alongside her colleagues Professor Theofanis Exadaktylos and Dr Laura Chappell. They were joined by Paul Taylor and Juraj Majcin from the European Policy Centre. The event was co-hosted by the Department of Politics and International Relations, European Policy Centre and the Institute for Advanced Studies.
The panellists took on the challenging task of assessing whether Europe can assume greater operational responsibility while maintaining NATO’s deterrence against Russia, and, crucially, sustaining US commitment.
Discussions explored where we stand in an increasingly disordered landscape, and how decision-making can become faster and more effective. The panellists also examined the evolving definition of the European defence ecosystem, with an accessible framework and published research forthcoming.
One powerful take from the discussion: “NATO is the collateral victim of Trump’s lack of precision."
