I’m a composer for TV and film and have had the privilege to compose music for numerous clients including HSBC, C4 Formula 1, Movistar TV series ‘Hope’ and more. The postgraduate course at Surrey gave me the time to build a portfolio of compositional work and get guidance from a variety of professional tutors to prepare my skills for the music industry. The community, support and facilities are like no other.

I spent my Professional Training placement at Aquarium Studios Ltd. in Soho, London, specialising in audio post-production for film and television. Because it was a small company, I covered a variety of roles from running and reception, through to preparing sessions and actually editing dialogue for popular computer games and television programmes. The year was vital in making contacts and getting to know the industry, making me more employable now I have graduated.”

The modules on my course gave me fantastic experience in concert management, which became an invaluable asset for working in the music industry. Since moving to London, I’ve met people through work who studied at Surrey years before I did, even back to when Surrey was Battersea Polytechnic. This mutual talking point has enabled me to make further connections, not just in the industry, but as new friends too.

“A placement informs a firm understanding of the working environment and will hold one in better stead when looking for a job after graduating. Working for Sky was a fantastic experience, one I was very lucky to have. I am currently still working for Sky on a part-time basis throughout my final year at Surrey.

       – Tim McKeever, BMus Music and Sound Recording (Tonmeister®)
