Year 8 pupils explore university life like never before

The University’s Widening Participation and Outreach team hosted 125 Year 8 pupils from schools across Surrey in February for their annual ‘Year 8 Week’.

Pupils were on campus for a full week, experiencing everything life at university has to offer. Trying out six different subjects from all three faculties, they got the opportunity to discover more about what interested them and if they could see themselves studying in Higher Education.

During the ‘Introduction to Veterinary Medicine’ session, pupils were tasked with creating an enclosure for an animal living in a zoo, ranging from snakes to elephants, and considering the ‘Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare’ in mind.

Throughout the week pupils were introduced to topics ranging from student finance and student-led societies, to specific subject areas offered at the University such as engineering and nutrition. Pupils were given the opportunity to experience university life in a way they hadn’t before, boosting their confidence and teamworking skills.

The feedback was fantastic, with one pupil from Slough and Eton saying: “This week allowed me to think about my future in more detail.”
