My research project
A Data-Driven and Experimental Study of How Floor Stiffness Influences Balance in Older Adults, Supported by Finite Element AnalysisSilas Purja, a postgraduate researcher at the University of Surrey, investigates the influence of floor stiffness on human balance. He conducts both static and dynamic balance assessments to examine how individuals maintain posture and mobility on surfaces with varying mechanical properties.
His findings provide insight into the relationship between floor characteristics and postural stability, particularly in older adults. In addition, Silas employs machine learning techniques to predict balance outcomes for novel floor designs. Complementing this, he performs Finite Element Analysis to characterise floor deformation under applied loads, offering a deeper understanding of the mechanical behaviour of flooring.
