The School is home to world-leading facilities that support our research and teaching activities, as well as enabling consultation with businesses.
Makerspace facilities
Facilities available within our School help our students with their studies and support a wide range of student activities. This includes:
- Access to the Engineering Design Centre
- Access to the Faculty workshop
- Widespread 3D-printing and other manufacturing facilities
- Support a wide range of student societies such as Formula Student and Peryton Space.
Teaching facilities
We offer industry standard facilities including our undergraduate teaching laboratories, Engineering Design Centre, Composites Laboratory and the SAGE Laboratory.

Professor Nicholas Hills
Head of School
Professor Nick Hills was the Head of Department of Mechanical Engineering Sciences until August 2021. He holds a Chair in Computational Engineering at the University of Surrey, and is also the Director of the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre in Thermo-Fluid Systems. He previously held a Royal Academy of Engineering / Rolls-Royce Chair.

Professor Jin Xuan
Associate Dean of Research and Innovation
Professor Jin Xuan joined the University of Surrey as the Associate Dean of Research and Innovation for the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences in September 2022. He holds a Chair in Sustainable Processes and a prestigious EPSRC Open Fellowship at the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. He is also a Turing Fellow at The Alan Turing Institute.
