Sustainable Development MScWhy did you choose to study your course at Surrey?
I chose to study MSc Sustainable Development at the University of Surrey because of its strong reputation and its practical approach to tackling real sustainability challenges.
"Coming from Bahrain, where sustainability is becoming an increasingly important priority, I wanted to study somewhere that combines academic excellence with a genuine commitment to making a difference."
Surrey’s focus on connecting research, policy, and community action really stood out to me, and I felt it would give me the tools I need to contribute meaningfully to change back home.
What are the best things about Surrey and your course?
The best thing about Surrey is the supportive environment — both academically and personally. The lecturers are passionate about what they teach and always willing to offer guidance, which makes a huge difference.
"I love how the course brings together people from different backgrounds and disciplines, all with a shared interest in sustainability."
The campus itself is beautiful and peaceful, with great facilities that make studying and living here very enjoyable.
What are the best things about life here as a postgraduate student?
Life at Surrey as a postgraduate student has been such a positive experience. The University has a really diverse and welcoming community, so it’s easy to make friends and feel at home, even when you’re far from your own country.
"There’s always something happening on campus — from cultural events to student activities — and it’s easy to balance study with social life. I also love Guildford; it’s a lovely town with everything you need, and London is just a short train ride away for when you want to explore more."
What are your career plans?
After completing my MSc, I hope to work in sustainability policy, focusing on projects that promote environmental protection and sustainable economic growth in Bahrain and across the region. I’m particularly interested in helping to design and implement policies that make sustainable development both practical and achievable in everyday life.
What advice do you have for students thinking of doing this course?
I’d say go for it — it’s such a rewarding experience. Be open to learning from different perspectives and don’t be afraid to share your own ideas and experiences.
"Sustainable development is such a broad field, and Surrey gives you the freedom to explore what inspires you most."
Take advantage of the opportunities to connect with your lecturers and classmates — you’ll learn as much from the people around you as from the course itself.
