Health Psychology MScWhy did you choose to study your course at Surrey?
A big part of the reason I decided to study the MSc in Health Psychology was my experience as an undergraduate at Surrey. I did my BSc in Psychology and found it to be an incredibly rich experience that gave me everything I was hoping for – and more!
In my third year I had to choose my optional modules and Health Psychology stood out to me. The topic was covered excellently by the teaching staff and there were lots of opportunities for discussion with peers from different backgrounds.
When it came to deciding what to do next, I felt like the decision had already been made for me. The excellent staff, warm atmosphere and profoundly positive learning experiences I’d had all contributed to me choosing to stay and study the Health Psychology MSc. I also knew that Surrey was the place to be if I wanted to be at the forefront of this subject and develop my knowledge to the highest standard.
What are the best things about Surrey and your course?
The University is a very special place that caters to your every need; you can socialise with friends and meet new people, or find a peaceful spot to properly recharge after an intense day of lectures or studying. The close proximity to various parks and Guildford town centre also makes Surrey a very good environment to study in as you're never too far from a regenerative walk or a get-together with friends.
One of the best things about my course is that it brings together likeminded people in a nurturing environment where everyone is encouraged to reach their full potential. The constant support from staff and peers with various aspects of University life ensured I was getting the most out of lessons and my overall experience. There is a great sense of community and support.
The delivery of the course is also excellent. Topics are presented by experts, whether a lecturer at Surrey or a guest speaker, who ensure you understand it from all perspectives. The real-life relevance of topics is always highlighted and a critical lens is always used to explore knowledge and encourage independent thought.
"This course doesn’t just teach you about health psychology, it also teaches you a lot about yourself. At Surrey, you have a great team of lecturers, students and researchers that will give you the best support you can ask for!"
What are the best things about life here as a postgraduate student?
I would say that the combination of location, facilities and community is the best thing about life at Surrey as a postgrad. You have amazing facilities for studying, exercising, socialising and relaxing, whether it be during or in between semesters. It really feels like the campus itself has a focus on student health and wellbeing, which, as a health psychologist, is quite satisfying.
You meet a mix of people that have similar interests but also their own unique perspective on life. Everyone I meet is willing to help when needed or have a friendly conversation. This extends to the staff, which made life so much better.
I have also developed as a Muay Thai coach at Shin Kick Muay Thai, a martial arts gym near the University where I met many other students. I developed my passion for sport, as well as leadership skills and a real idea of what it means to pursue a healthy lifestyle.
What are your career plans?
Currently my career plans are quite open. I have learned a lot of health psychology theory and how it is applied in the real world throughout my studies: how to conduct research, handle data, approach various challenges, and develop a critical mind.
My plans centre on finding a role where skills in research, theory and psychology can be applied to supporting people of all ages to live healthy, active lifestyles. This is obviously a very broad goal and can be achieved in different ways, but I’m sure, through the skills that I’ve gained, I’ll find a way to give back to the world and help others.
What advice do you have for students thinking of doing this course?
If you have the opportunity to do this course, it is absolutely worth it. I believe that the best approach to higher education is that you get from it what you put in and, at Surrey, you can really nurture your passion.
I'd encourage you to take every opportunity that comes your way, both big and small, as the more you try the more you’ll get out of it. Ask questions in class, talk to the lecturers about ideas and insights, take up the challenge of researching something more novel for your dissertation that’s unique and interesting to you. At the end of the day, you have everything to gain as no hard work is wasted.
This course doesn’t just teach you about health psychology, it also teaches you a lot about yourself. I believe that anyone can reach their goals if they try and, at Surrey, you have a great team of lecturers, students and researchers that will give you the best support you can ask for!
